MIDWEST CITY – The Mustang Broncos ended an action-packed week on a high note.
The Broncos (14-7, 7-1) slugged their way to a 11-6 win over the host Titans Saturday at the 2022 Carl Albert Festival. They went 2-1 on the weekend, including a win over Choctaw and a loss to Stillwater.
Mustang racked up 12 hits over five innings, including eight combined in the fourth and fifth to secure the comeback victory over Carl Albert. The Broncos trailed 5-1 entering the last two frames before a pair of clutch hits from juniors Arionna McElroy and Kenzie Sessions.
Senior Landry Garza got things going in the fourth with a leadoff single followed by a base knock from junior Emerson Pegram and a hit-by-pitch drawn by junior Fae Cornish to load the bases.
McElroy cut the deficit to 5-4 with a bases-clearing triple before scoring on an error to tie the game. After a walk drawn by freshman Reese Poage and a sacrifice bunt from junior Rylee Hannon, Sessions gave the Broncos a 6-5 lead with an RBI-single to center field.
Carl Albert (13-3) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth before another five-run explosion from Mustang in the fifth.
Cornish broke the tie with a one-out RBI-single after senior Mackie Vaught was placed on second base for the international tiebreaker. McElroy, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI, followed with a double to center field before a two-RBI double from Poage to give Mustang a 9-6 lead.
After an error by the Titans off the bat of Hannon, Sessions drove home the Broncos’ 10th run with a sacrifice fly. Freshman Lexy Kierstead followed with an RBI-double – the team’s third extra-base hit of the inning.
Sessions, Kierstead, and Poage all finished with two hits and combined to drive in six runs. Kierstead hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to plate the team’s first run of the game.
