Thayer, Langdon crack top 10 at COAC Championship Meet, lead Broncos to fourth-place finish

Noah Thayer (Jr.) and Cameron Langdon (Sr.) each finished inside the top 10 at the Central Oklahoma Athletics Conference Championship Meet on Tuesday at Deer Creek High School, leading the No. 7 Mustang Broncos to fourth place as a team.

Thayer finished third overall, clocking in at 15:33.00, while Langdon finished seventh with a time of 15:45.29.

Both racers improved upon their times from the season-opening Deer Creek Field Run Festival in August, which was run on the same course as Tuesday’s conference meet. Thayer shed over 30 seconds (16:06.74) while Langdon came in nearly one minute faster (16:35.67).

Teagan Nelson (Jr.), Sean MartinezKappel (Jr.), and Jackson Hill (So.) rounded out Mustang’s conference placers, each finishing inside the top 40.

Nelson placed 21st with a time of 16:07.79 while MartinezKappel placed 32nd (16:31.12) and Hill placed 36th (16:45.27). All three also improved upon their times from the Field Run Festival by at least 15 seconds. MartinezKappel and Hill cut nearly 30 seconds from their outing in August.

Seniors Myles Mayfield and Ashton Anderson finished as Mustang’s displacers. Mayfield came in 46th place with a time of 16:56.88 while Anderson clocked in at 17:36.30, crossing the finish line in 66th place.

The Broncos accumulated 99 points, scoring just one more point than top-ranked Piedmont (98) and eight more than No. 3 Edmond Memorial (91). PHS finished third while EMHS finished runner-up. Mustang’s racers averaged a time of 16:08.49.

Second-ranked Deer Creek captured the conference title with a score of 68 points and an average time of 15:57.79. Stillwater’s Mez Berth (Sr.) won the individual title with a time of 15:02.46.

MUSTANG GIRLS FINISH 10TH

The Bronco girls finished 10th overall with two racers placing inside the top 50.

Seniors Kendall Howell and Emerson Hodde led the way with Howell placing 16th (19:04.22) and Hodde placing 44th (20:31.53).

Jayci Klopfenstein (So.), Natalia Echeverria (So.), and Londyn Medrano (Sr.) rounded out the team’s placers. Klopfenstein placed 61st with a time of 21:34.89 while Echeverria placed 68th (22:13.22) and Medrano placed 69th (22:13.38).

Lauren Vivier (Sr.) and Elliana Ortiz (Jr.) came in as the team’s displacers. Vivier finished in 80th place (23:06.56) while Ortiz finished 86th (25:33.95).

Mustang accumulated 258 team points with an average time of 21:07.45.

Top-ranked Piedmont won the COAC title with 39 points and an average time of 18:33.69. No. 3 Edmond North finished runner-up while No. 5 Deer Creek finished third. Edmond Santa Fe’s Natalie Duggan (Sr.) captured the individual crown with a time of 17:41.70.

NEXT UP

Mustang begins postseason action in just under two weeks. The Broncos look to clinch spots in the Class 6A State Championship Meet at the west side regional, which will be held on Oct. 26 at a site yet to be determined.
