The Mustang Broncos picked up three wins in the 2024 Choctaw/Carl Albert Festival last week, defeating the Yukon Millers, the Class 4A Cache Bulldogs, and the Stillwater Pioneers.

The Broncos combined for 20 hits in their three victories while senior pitchers Amelia Mason and Aubree Hall helped guide the team from the circle. After the weekend, Mustang had won 15 of its last 17 games following a 1-4 start to the season.

MUSTANG 2, YUKON 1

Mustang (17-6, 10-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and held the Millers to just one run to seal its 10th straight win.

Coach Lacy Darity’s squad used four singles in a row to push across a pair of runs in the first. First baseman Rylann Beeson (Jr.), and centerfielder Lexy Kierstead (Jr.) got things going with back-to-back singles before RBI-knocks by catcher Jade Ashbaugh (So.) and second baseman Abigail Keele (Jr.) for a two-run lead.

Beeson and Kierstead each went 2-for-3 with one run apiece.

Yukon (9-10, 6-2) pushed across one run in the top of the third on an error, a sacrifice bunt, and a single, however, that was all the Millers would muster as Mason was fantastic in the tournament opener. She scattered four hits and three walks while striking out two over six innings.

MUSTANG 9, CACHE 2

The Broncos picked up a revenge win over the Cache Bulldogs in Game 2 of the tournament, producing nine runs on 10 hits while Hall shined from the circle.

Mustang took a 2-0 lead early and after the Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, the Broncos exploded for seven runs in the bottom half to seal the victory.

Keele, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, got things going in the second inning with a one-out single, followed by left fielder Weslyn McCorvey (Fr.) reaching on an error. Two batters later, right fielder Natalia Delgado (Sr.), who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run, doubled home two runs to give her team the early advantage.

The Bulldogs (12-13, 8-2) tied the game with two runs on a walk, an error, and a double in the top of the fourth inning before the Broncos answered with seven runs on six hits and three errors in the bottom half of the frame.

McCorvey led off the inning with a single before a one-out knock by Delgado two batters later. McCorvey scored on a passed ball before shortstop Reese Poage (Jr.) drove home a run with a single to make it 4-2.

Beeson, who went 2-for-3, followed with a single before a two-RBI knock by Kierstead to give Mustang a 6-2 lead. Ashbaugh reached on an error in the next at-bat before an RBI-line drive by Keele to extend the advantage to 8-2. Two more mishaps by Cache pushed across the Broncos’ final run, sealing the victory at 9-2.

Hall was sensational from the circle, allowing just two unearned runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. She finished with three strikeouts on 81 total pitches.

With the win, Mustang avenged a 10-7 loss to the Bulldogs on Aug. 17 in the 2024 Chisholm Trail Classic at Tuttle High School.

MUSTANG 2, STILLWATER 1

The Broncos and Pioneers combined for the game’s only three runs in the first inning, including two by Mustang to pull out a 2-1 win in the final game of the tournament.

The Pioneers (9-13, 4-3) took a 1-0 lead on a single and a double in the top of the first, however, the Broncos responded with two runs on two walks, a sacrifice fly, and one hit in the bottom half of the frame.

Kierstead got things going with a one-out single before scoring on a pop out off the bat of Ashbaugh, tying the game at 1-1. Beeson followed with a walk before scoring on an RBI-single by Keele to take a 2-1 lead.

Poage, Beeson, Keele, and Delgado finished with Mustang’s only hits, including a double by Beeson.

Mason earned her second win of the tournament, allowing just one run on five hits and a walk over five innings. She struck out three while tossing just 77 pitches.

NEXT UP

The Broncos travel to Midwest City to take on the Bombers (3-11, 0-7) on Tuesday, Sept. 17 before returning home on Sept. 19 to host the Edmond North Huskies (9-8, 4-4). Mustang has already defeated both teams in district play this season.
