The Mustang boys opened the season with a runner-up finish in the 2023 Deer Creek Field Run last weekend, finishing ahead of state title contenders Piedmont and Edmond North.
Carson Patten (Sr.) and Cameron Langdon (Jr.) each cracked the 16-minute mark and the top-10 to help lead the Broncos to an overall time of 1:21:40.
Patten finished third with a time of 15:44.3 while Langdon placed seventh with a time of 15:50.8. Only Deer Creek’s Graham Mitchell (1st – 15:.06.4) and Brody Woodcock (2nd – 15:31.9) finished ahead of Mustang’s top racer.
Noah Thayer (So.) finished No. 3 for the Broncos and 18th overall with a time of 16:21.0. Teegan Nelson (So.) also placed inside the top-25, coming in 21st with a time of 16:39.2. Wyatt Fryar (Sr.) rounded out the team’s placers in 32nd with a time of 17:05.4.
Luke Balliew (Sr.) and Ryan Cable (Sr.) also finished inside the top-40 as the team’s displacers. Balliew placed 33rd with a time of 17:06.5 while Cable placed 37th with a time of 17:16.7.
Deer Creek captured the championship as the event host. All five of the team’s placers finished inside the top-20. Piedmont finished third with three inside the top-20, including Dade Humes who finished sixth overall. Edmond North finished fourth with Colby Moore leading the way in fifth place overall.
MUSTANG GIRLS
The Bronco girls finished ninth overall at the season-opening race, placing three inside the top-50.
Carol Le (Sr.) led the way with a 24th-place finish, crossing the finish line in 20:17.8. She is settling in well as the team’s No. 1 runner.
Emerson Hodde (Jr.) came in No. 2 for Mustang and 45th overall, finishing with a time of 21:25.4. Morgan McClain (So.) was on her heels in 46th place, clocking in at 21:26.5.
Kiara Smith (Sr.) and Lauren Vivier (Jr.) rounded out the team’s top-five. Smith placed 67th with a time of 22:47.9 while Vivier placed 77th with a time of 23:38.2. Sophomore Julia Sroczynski (86th – 24:41.8) and freshman Jayci Klopfenstein (87th – 25:14.9) finished as the team’s displacers.
Deer Creek also won the girls championship with all five placers finishing inside the top-20. Piedmont finished runner-up and Edmond Memorial finished third. Edmond North’s Morgan Kirkland finished first individually with a time of 18:18.15.
UP NEXT: MUSTANG HARRIER
The Broncos now turn their focus to the 2023 Mustang Harrier at Wild Horse Park.
The Harrier is the only race in the state run at night. The course will be lit by the lights at the City of Mustang softball complex.
The first race of the night – the girls junior varsity – is set to start at 7:30 p.m. followed by the boys JV and then varsity races.
