Two Mustang Broncos placed at one of the premier and most historic tournaments in the country last weekend.
Jacen Jackson (Jr.) placed third at 165 pounds while Javin Douglas (So.) placed sixth at 120, helping lead the No. 15 Broncos to a 28-point performance at the 78th Geary Invitational.
Jackson, who made his way back to the second-place match after falling in the championship bracket quarterfinals, secured 13 points for his squad while going 5-1.
After a bye in the first round, Jackson defeated Marlow’s Zach Dawson 8-4 before a 5-4 loss to Lawton Mac’s Braden Brown in the quarterfinals.
Jackson bounced back with four straight wins, including three against Class 6A opponents. He defeated Brayden Lucas (Edmond North) 3-2 before pinning Union’s Zamar Gardner and Andres Suarez (Tascosa, Tex.). Jackson knocked off Edmond Memorial’s Michael McCracken in the third-place match.
Douglas’ route through the tournament was nearly the same as Jackson’s.
Douglas received a bye in the first round before pinning Cameron Bruce from Arkansas City, Kan. in the second round. Douglas fell to Broken Arrow’s Kaleb Collins by major decision before two straight wins over Kason White from Randall, Tex. and Christian Belford from Edmond North.
Douglas fell to Arlington Martin’s River Perlungher by fall before again losing to Collins, this time by fall, in the fifth-place match.
Four other Broncos earned two points apiece at the tournament, including Jayden Gracy (Jr.) at 126 pounds, Tommy Davis at 138, Quentin Sizemore at 150, and Sam Pritz at 285. Flynn Brandrup (132), Zach Warren (175), Pryce Burgess (190), and Seth Brown (215) also competed for Mustang.
No. 1 Stillwater won the tournament while No. 2 Edmond North finished second and 4A No. 1 Tuttle finished third. The Broncos finished 17th overall.
JUNIOR HIGH WINS CARL ALBERT TOURNAMENT
The Mustang junior high squad came away with the Carl Albert tournament championship for a third straight year, edging Moore for first place last weekend in Midwest City.
The Broncos finished with two champions, including Max Baca (170) and Trusten Douglas (92-98), three runners-up, including Jaceon Garcia (112), Hunter Higgins (140), and Tristen Reed (155). Dolin Parnell (106), Hank Bullard (119), Davis Howard (126), and Jarren Peterson (132) all placed third.
