EDMOND – Edmond North and Deer Creek set the pace for Mustang and likely the rest of Class 6A at the season opening Deer Creek Field Run in August.
The Broncos eclipsed that mark and surpassed the top-ranked Huskies and No. 3 Antlers on Tuesday, taking home the Central Oklahoma Athletics Conference championship on the same course as the Field Run.
“They waxed us the very first race,” Mustang coach Mike McGarry said. “We knew after the first race we had a long way to go. The guys have been working hard and have continued to improve and I think we have closed the gap.”
Mustang scored 61 points – 25 ahead of second-place Deer Creek and 46 points ahead of Edmond North, who finished fourth.
Noah Thayer (Fr.), Cameron Langdon (So.), and Carson Patten (Jr.) led the way, each placing back-to-back-to-back inside the top-10.
Thayer paced the Broncos for the first time this season, cracking the 16-minute mark with a time of 15:58.01 – good for sixth place overall.
Langdon finished seventh with a time of 16:02.65 while Patten placed eighth with a time of 16:05.04.
Dylan Chaoomachaisiri (Sr.) and Jacoby Nance (Sr.) rounded out the team’s scorers. Chaoomachaisiri placed 18th with a time of 16:24.81 while Nance placed 22nd with a time of 16:32.73.
The team’s displacers, Luke Balliew (Jr.) and Ryan Cable (Jr.), barely missed out on contributing to the overall score, but still played a part in adding points to opposing racers’ production.
Balliew placed 23rd overall with a time of 16:33.32 while Cable placed 32nd with a time of 16:42.57.
The Broncos’ average top-five time of 16:12.64 was over four seconds better than the Antlers and the team’s top-five split time of :34 was matched only by third-place Edmond Memorial. The team clocked a total time of 1:21:03.
Mustang now shifts its focus to the Class 6A regional meet set for Oct. 22 at Wild Horse Park. The Broncos should qualify for the state meet at regionals, which will be held on Oct. 29 at Edmond Santa Fe.
