The Mustang Broncos are no strangers to Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
For a fifth straight season, MHS is one of the last eight teams standing and will be looking to capture a state title at the Class 6A Fast-Pitch State Tournament, starting with a quarterfinal matchup against the Edmond Memorial Bulldogs on Thursday at noon.
The Broncos (27-8) punched their state tournament ticket with a 6-1 win over Muskogee and a 9-5 victory over Deer Creek in the regional tournament last week at home. Mustang combined for 20 hits while pitchers Amelia Mason (Sr.) and Aubree Hall (Sr.) combined to allow just 11 knocks.
First baseman Rylann Beeson (Jr.), extra hitter Reece Fixico (So.), and right fielder Natalia Delgado (Sr.) each finished with two hits against Muskogee while center fielder Lexy Kierstead (Jr.), second baseman Abigail Keele (Jr.) and third baseman Adyson McGavock (So.) all recorded one hit.
Beeson, left fielder Weslyn McCorvey (Fr.), and Fixico rattled off two hits apiece vs Deer Creek while shortstop Reese Poage (Jr.), catcher Jade Ashbaugh (So.), Kierstead, Delgado, and McGavock each finished with one knock.
Coach Lacy Darity’s squad takes on a Memorial team that finished second in Class 6A District 1 with a 24-12 record overall. The two teams faced each other once during the regular season – a 4-0 win by the Broncos in the 2024 Northwest Oklahoma City Festival on Sept. 21.
With a win, MHS would face either Choctaw (29-5) or Stillwater (18-18) in the semifinals on Friday at 11 a.m. The Broncos faced the Yellowjackets once this season – a 7-2 loss on Aug. 16 in the Chisholm Trail Festival at Tuttle High School. They squared off against the Pioneers once as well – a 2-1 win on Sept. 14 in the Carl Albert/Choctaw Festival.
Choctaw finished second in 6A District 3 while Stillwater finished atop District 1.
The bottom half of the 6A bracket features a matchup between Moore (27-7) and Yukon (21-12) at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and a matchup between Owasso (29-6) and Bartlesville (28-11) at 5 p.m.
The Lions captured the 6A District 2 title while the Millers finished runner-up. The Rams won District 3 while the Bruins finished third.
Mustang defeated Yukon 2-1 on Sept. 13 in the Carl Albert/Choctaw Festival. The Broncos did not face Moore, Owasso, or Bartlesville during the regular season.
The first two rounds of the state tournament will be played on Integris Field at Devon Park with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on OGE Field.
The Broncos will head to OKC tomorrow at 10:20 a.m. with a “State Send Off” planned along the route toward Mustang Road and Interstate 40.
