The Mustang Broncos (3-1, 0-1) head to Enid tonight to take on the Plainsmen (2-2, 0-1) for the team’s second district matchup of the 2024 season.

The Broncos are coming off a tough loss to the Moore Lions last week at Bronco Stadium, dropping their district opener after a bad snap led to a missed field goal in the final seconds of the game. Enid enters the matchup after a 49-0 road loss to Deer Creek last Friday night.

It’s the first time the two teams have met in nearly 20 years. Can coach Lee Blankenship’s team bounce back and move to 1-1 in Class 6A-1 District 1?

Check out the pregame primer and find out who The Mustang Sports Review thinks will come out on top tonight:

WHO TO WATCH FOR OFFENSIVELY: MUSTANG

Quarterback Trajan Williamson (Sr.) seems a little more healthy after passing for 183 yards with three touchdowns against Moore. He also rushed 13 times, which is a good sign for the Broncos as he has been banged up the last two weeks.

Williamson is up to 929 yards passing on the season with 11 TDs and 147 yards rushing with five scores.

The Broncos were held in check on the ground last week against the Lions, rushing for only 62 yards. However, running back Latin Everheart (Sr.) is primed for a bounce back performance. Everheart is up to 358 rushing yards this season with five touchdowns. Taven Brown (So.) and Gerald Ackah-Mensah (Jr.) could also play a factor.

Jaden Johnson (Jr.) and Jaytee Johnson (Jr.) continue to be Williamson’s top targets at wide receiver, however, Ben Patkowski (Sr.) and Derek Straughn (Jr.) have also played well.

The Johnson twins have combined for 580 receiving yards with eight touchdown catches. Patkowski is up to 286 yards with two scores while Straughn has 43 yards with one TD since returning from injury over the last two games.

WHO TO WATCH FOR OFFENSIVELY: ENID

Enid quarterback Aidan Robinson passed for just over 100 yards last week in the team’s loss to Deer Creek. He racked up over 250 yards with three touchdown passes in a 38-23 loss to Stillwater prior to the team’s bye week and 120 yards with three scores in a 49-21 win over Lawton in Week 2. Not to mention 250 yards with two scores in a season-opening win over Ponca City.

Wide receiver Keon Young was Robinson’s top target against the Pioneers, catching two TD passes while going for over 100 yards. Receiver Dez Mittelstet also caught an 80-yard touchdown pass vs Stillwater. Zyire Allen is another receiver to watch for on Friday.

The Plainsmen will be without running back Blake Fuska, who rushed for over 200 yards in the team’s win over Lawton and 91 yards on 15 carries against Ponca City. They will likely turn to Tyson Kennedy, who caught one TD and rushed for one in the same game.

WHO TO WATCH FOR DEFENSIVELY: MUSTANG

The Broncos will be looking to bounce back after allowing 399 total yards against Moore, including 371 yards on the ground.

Mustang gave up 164 yards to Moore RB Ozias Adams and 145 yards to quarterback Maverick Gardner, who moved under center after starter Malikai Miller suffered an injury early in the game.

Defensive lineman Louie Jones (Sr.) has 17 total tackles with three sacks so far this season while Onesi Ngalo (Sr.) is up to 23 tackles. The two big men will look help neutralize Enid’s offensive line and keep their run game in check.

Linebackers Kaden Bachus (Jr.), Parker Sorrell (Jr.), and Josiah Stevens (Jr.) have combined for 147 tackles this season. Watch for Mustang’s linebacker trio to have a big game vs the Plainsmen.

Waleed Gaines Jr. (Sr.), Blaine Fulmer (Sr.), Tucker Brown (So.), and Tayten Duncan (Jr.) have combined for nine interceptions this season and will be tasked with helping shut down Enid’s pass game.

WHO TO WATCH FOR DEFENSIVELY: ENID

The Plainsmen have allowed an average of 29.5 points per game in 2024, including 87 points over their last two games.

Kennedy is their leader in the secondary. The junior safety has picked off quarterbacks 15 times over the last two and 1/2 seasons. Cornerback Brady Beierschmitt will be tasked with helping shut down Mustang’s outstanding receiver corps.

Luka Sears, Jradden Russell, Jarrett Russell, and Colt Newman lead the team along the defensive line.

PREDICTION: MUSTANG 38, ENID 10

The Broncos bounce back from the loss to Moore with a blowout victory in Week 2 of district play.

Mustang’s offense will put up over 250 yards passing and 150 yards rushing with Williamson leading the way. The Bronco defense will hold Enid’s offense under 250 yards total and will force at least two turnovers.
