The Mustang Broncos (1-0) continue the 2024 season tonight, hosting the Broken Arrow Tigers (1-1) in a non-district clash at Bronco Stadium.

The Broncos are coming off a blowout win over Canadian County Bedlam rival Yukon in Week 1 while Broken Arrow enters Friday off a 30-23 home loss to Fayetteville High School (Ark.). The two teams have not matched up since the 2015 Class 6A playoffs – a 24-17 win by the Tigers.

WHO TO WATCH FOR OFFENSIVELY: MUSTANG

Quarterback Trajan Williamson (Sr.) returned to the field last week and dominated the Millers, going 21-for-23 for 339 yards with five touchdown passes. He also rushed 10 times for 65 yards and one score. He looks to continue his hot start after starting for the first time since a season-ending injury in Week 7 of 2023.

The Johnson twins – Jaytee and Jaden – will be Williamson’s primary targets. Jaytee, who returned after a season-ending collarbone injury in Week 1 last fall, is coming off a huge game against Yukon. He caught eight passes for 161 yards with three touchdowns. Jaden, who broke the 1,000-yard mark last year, caught seven passes for 76 yards with one score against the Millers.

The Broncos rushed for 245 yards in Week 1, led by Williamson’s 65. Broken Arrow’s defense should be ready for Taven Brown (So.), Latin Everheart (Sr.), and Gerald Ackah-Mensah (Jr.) as well. Brown carried 13 times for 52 yards while Ackah-Mensah rushed seven time for 53 yards and one score against Yukon. Everheart added 42 yards on five carries.

WHO TO WATCH FOR OFFENSIVELY: BROKEN ARROW

Junior quarterback Jeramiah Ssettimba went 16-for-31 for 189 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions last week against Fayetteville HS. He was much better in Week 0, going 21-for-30 for 292 yards with three TDs in a 42-21 Week 0 win over Springdale Har-Ber (Ark.).

Ssetimba operates mostly out of the pistol formation and possesses the athletic ability to be a dual threat against any opponent. He has rushed for 55 yards so far this season.

Running back Octavian Roberson is a big weapon for the Tigers. He has amassed 234 yards on 47 carries this season and has punched in two touchdowns. He rushed for 114 yards on 28 carries in Week 1 vs Fayetteville and 120 yards on 19 carries with two TDs against Springdale Har-Ber in Week 0.

The Tigers have two wideouts to watch out for, starting with sophomore Zane Matthews, who is up to 14 receptions for 151 yards in 2024. He is also a threat on special teams with three kickoff returns for a total of 91 yards so far this season. Matthews cracked the 150-yard mark last week, catching eight passes for 108 yards while returning two kickoffs for 59 yards.

Tayshawn Jones Wade (Jr.) is the Tigers’ other top threat on the outside, racking up 10 receptions for 160 yards with two touchdowns so far this fall. He finished with four catches for 54 yards with one score last week against Fayetteville and six receptions for 106 yards with one TD against Springdale Har-Ber in Week 0.

WHO TO WATCH FOR DEFENSIVELY: MUSTANG

Mustang’s defensive front will have its hands full with the Tigers, however, tackles Louie Jones (Sr.) and Emory Kelly (Sr.) should be ready. Jones and Kelly each finished with two sacks in Week 1 while combining for six total tackles. Both players provide plenty of size up front, which should help neutralize Broken Arrow’s offensive attack.

Linebackers Josiah Stevens (Jr.), Kaden Bachus (Jr.), and Parker Sorrell (Jr.) combined for 16 total tackles in Week 1, including two sacks and one tackle for loss. The junior trio will have to produce another solid effort to keep the Tigers at bay in Week 2.

Cornerbacks Waleed Gaines Jr. (Sr.) and Tucker Brown (So.) will be on the lookout for Broken Arrow’s two top wideouts in Week 2. Gaines Jr. finished with two tackles last week and pulled down an interception while Brown finished with three tackles. Safety Blaine Fulmer (Sr.) will also need to have another big game after producing seven tackles against Yukon, including one tackle for loss.

WHO TO WATCH FOR DEFENSIVELY: BROKEN ARROW

Senior linebacker Cole Lamont is Broken Arrow’s top defensive player, finishing with nine tackles, including a sack in the team’s loss to Fayetteville last week. Safeties Tyrek Taylor and TJ Shanks combined for 12 and 1/2 tackles and a forced fumble by Taylor.

The Tigers offer multiple looks on the defensive side, including a formation without any down linemen.

PREDICTION: MUSTANG 38, BROKEN ARROW 21

The Broncos have an offensive attack that can light up the scoreboard against any team in the state, including the Tigers. Watch out for another big game by the Johnson twins and for the team’s running back room to again eclipse 150 yards. Also, look for another big game by Williamson.

Will Broken Arrow score points? They should, considering their offense looks better than Yukon’s both on film and on paper. However, it won’t be enough to come away with a win at Bronco Stadium.
