The Mustang Broncos improved to 4-0 in Class 6A District 4 after picking up a 6-2 road win over the Ponca City Wildcats on Aug. 27.
Amelia Mason (Sr.) racked up nine strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs on four hits and two walks over seven innings, sealing her fourth district win from the circle. The Bronco lineup collected eight hits, including one double, one triple, and a home run.
SCORING PLAYS
Mustang (16-6, 9-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with four hits in the top of the second inning.
Left fielder Weslyn McCorvey (Fr.) put the first run on the board with a one-out, solo homer before a knock by Mason and a single with an error by Skyla Hagan (Fr.) gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
McCorvey and Hagan each finished with two hits and one RBI. McCorvey went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Hagan went 2-for-3 with a triple and also scored a pair of runs.
Third baseman Adyson McGavock (So.) made it 3-0 with an RBI-groundout that scored Hagan in the follow at-bat.
Coach Lacy Darity’s squad took advantage of three Ponca City errors while tallying two knocks and a sacrifice bunt in the top of the fourth inning, extending the advantage to 6-0.
McCorvey got things going again by reaching on an error in the circle before moving to second on a sac-bunt by Mason. Hagan followed with her second hit of the game – a triple to right field which put her team up 4-0. McGavock singled in the next at bat for her second knock, driving in Hagan for a 5-0 lead.
Shortstop Reese Poage (Jr.) reached on an error before the Wildcats’ third mishap of the frame – a blunder off the bat of first baseman Rylann Beeson (Jr.) – pushed Poage across to make it 6-0.
Poage, Beeson, Mason, and McGavock all finished with one hit, including a double by Poage. McGavock tallied a team-high two RBI.
Ponca City (18-3, 8-2), who as of Sept. 16 sits in third place in 6A District 4, cracked the scoreboard with two solo home runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Broncos travel to Midwest City to take on the Bombers (3-11, 0-7) on Tuesday, Sept. 17 before returning home on Sept. 19 to host the Edmond North Huskies (9-8, 4-4). Mustang has already defeated both teams in district play this season.
