Broncos move to 3-0 in Class 6A District 4 with 30 hits in wins over Bixby, Jenks

The Mustang Broncos moved to 3-0 in Class 6A District 4 play with a pair of wins over the Bixby Spartans and Jenks Trojans last week.

Mustang (5-5, 3-0) hosted the Spartans on Aug. 19, cranking out 15 hits in a 7-4 win before traveling to Jenks and scoring 11 runs in another 15-hit performance. After opening the season with a win over Edmond North, the Broncos have now won three straight regular season district games.

MUSTANG 7, BIXBY 4

Three players collected at least two hits in the team’s three-run victory over Bixby.

Shortstop Reese Poage (Jr.) went 4-for-4 with an RBI while centerfielder Lexy Kierstead (Jr.) and left fielder Weslyn McCorvey (Fr.) each went 2-for-4 with a combined four RBI, including a home run by Kierstead and a double by McCorvey.

The Broncos got things going early, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Poage led the frame off with a single before reaching third on a double by first baseman Rylann Beeson (Jr.). Catcher Jade Ashbaugh (So.) pushed home the game’s first run with an RBI-groundout to second base for a 1-0 lead.

Kierstead followed with an RBI-single to score Beeson and make it 2-0.

Mustang extended the lead to 3-0 with one run on three hits in the bottom of the second.

The Broncos loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch drawn by pitcher Amelia Mason (Sr.) and two singles by right fielder Bailey Summa (So.) and third baseman Adyson McGavock (So.). Poage gave the team a three-run advantage two batters later with an RBI-single to center field.

Bixby (3-3, 1-1) cut the lead to 3-2 with one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth. However, coach Lacy Darity’s team answered with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to seal the victory.

Kierstead swatted a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2 before the Broncos scored three times on four hits in the sixth.

Pinch hitter Nyli Brown (Sr.) and Poage led off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles before a one-out double by Ashbaugh, who finished with two RBI, extended Mustang’s lead to 5-3. McCorvey followed with a two-out, two-run double to make it 7-3.

The Spartans scored one run in the top of the seventh, however Mason shut the door after allowing a solo home run. Mason allowed just three earned runs on four hits and two walks over seven frames. She finished with three strikeouts on 108 pitches.

MUSTANG 11, JENKS 1

The Broncos needed just six innings to knock off the Trojans, led by multi-hit performances by five players and another solid outing by Mason.

Poage, McGavock, and second baseman Abigail Keele (Jr.) each finished with three knocks while Ashbaugh and McCorvey finished with two. Poage racked up two doubles and a triple while Ashbaugh also collected a triple.

The Broncos got going early, scoring three runs on three hits, two free passes, and a Jenks error in the top of the first inning.

Poage and Beeson started the frame with a double and a single before Poage scored the game’s first run on a passed ball. Following a walk to Ashbaugh, Beeson scored on an error off the bat of Kierstead to make it 2-0.

McCorvey singled in the next at-bat before a fielder’s choice on a bunt by Mason scored Kierstead for a three-run advantage.

The Trojans (5-6, 3-2) cut the lead to 3-1 before Mustang answered with two runs on four hits and a walk in the top of the third.

Keele and McGavock each reached on single while Mason walked to load the bases. Poage followed with a two-out, two-RBI double to give the Broncos a 5-1 lead.

Mustang scored twice in the top of the fourth to extend the lead again.

Ashbaugh got things going with a triple before another Jenks error off the bat of Kierstead made it 6-1. Following a sacrifice bunt by McGorvey, Keele gave her squad a 7-1 advantage with an RBI-single to center field.

The Broncos scored one run in the top of the fifth before plating three more in the sixth to seal the victory.

Poage tripled and later scored on a Jenks error in the fifth. The star shortstop finished with two RBI and two runs.

Kierstead, who also finished with two RBI, singled to lead off the sixth before a walk to McGorvey and a two-RBI groundout by Mason to make it 10-1. Following a single by Keele and a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Reece Fixico (So.), McGavock singled home Keele to extend the advantage to 11-1.

Mason earned her second win of the week by allowing just one earned run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. She also drove home two runs at the plate.
