Four players score in double figures as Mustang routes Deer Creek for important district win

EDMOND – The Mustang Broncos’ run of strong play continued on Tuesday night with a blowout win over the Deer Creek Antlers.

The Broncos (15-6, 8-4) dominated from start to finish, winning 60-31 for the 11th victory over their last 14 games. Four players scored in double figures, including Cherish Haywood (Jr.) who finished with a game-high 14 points.

The team’s full court press worked well against the Antlers early in the game. Coach Katie Smith’s squad also dominated the glass, winning the rebound battle 35-18 overall. Mustang also forced 20 Deer Creek turnovers.

The Broncos dropped 17 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Haywood scored seven, helping guide the team to a 10-point lead through eight minutes. Deer Creek (5-16, 2-10) went nearly five minutes without scoring during the period.

Parker Simonsen (Sr.) and Mya Alston (So.) also scored in double figures and combined for 10 of the team’s 16 points in the second quarter, leading to a 33-18 lead at halftime.

Simonsen finished the game with 11 points, five assists, and two rebounds while Alston scored 12 points with four boards and one helper. The duo combined for five triples on nine attempts.

Eliana Valentin Florance (Jr.) scored eight points in the first half. She also finished in double figures with 11 points, going 4-for-11 from the floor overall and 3-for-9 from long range.

The Broncos all but sealed the win with an 18-7 run in the third quarter.

Haywood, who also finished with five rebounds and five assists, scored seven in the period while Alston scored six. Haywood also finished the game with one steal and a highlight reel blocked three-pointer that she turned into a fastbreak layup.

Mustang closed out the win with nine points in the final eight minutes, including five points from Christal Long (Jr.). Long also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Ehryana Boykins (So.) and Reese Poage (So.) each drilled a pair of free throws down the stretch.

Deer Creek finished with just eight made baskets on 29 attempts. Adriana Radinovic (Fr.) led the Antlers with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Broncos have just two games remaining on the regular season schedule, including a Senior Night matchup against Moore (9-10, 6-6) tonight at the Mustang Event Center. They close out the campaign at Norman North (9-10, 6-6) on Tuesday.

Currently Mustang sits in third place in Class 6A District 1 – just one game behind Putnam City North (16-5, 9-3) for second place. Two-time defending state champion Edmond North (18-1, 12-0) is in first place with a perfect record in district play.
