Six Broncos place at 2023-24 COAC Tournament; No. 9 Mustang finishes fourth overall

Led by six placers, including four runners-up, the No. 10 Mustang Broncos finished fourth in the 2024 Central Oklahoma Athletics Conference Tournament last weekend at Southmoore.

Trusten Douglas (Fr.), Van Smith (Fr.), Javin Douglas (Sr.), and Daegan Reyes (Jr.) all nabbed silver medals while Max Baca (Fr.) and Sam Pritz (Sr.) each finished fourth.

Mustang’s six placers combined for 125 of the team’s 149.5 points. The Broncos finished just ahead of rival Yukon, who scored 142.5.

Trusten Douglas received a bye in the first round at 106 pounds before pinning Yukon’s Caleb Schneider at 2:00 in the quarterfinals. He followed with a 10-7 win over Edmond North’s Tommy Baker in the semis before losing by fall to the Huskies’ Jason Goodin in the championship match.

Smith reached the championship match at 113 pounds with three straight wins.

He defeated Norman’s Reed Steele by fall at 1:10 in the first round before pinning Yukon’s Caleb Williamson at the :47 mark in the quarterfinals. Smith followed by pinning Piedmont’s Brody Heusel at 5:24 in the semis before losing by fall to Edmond North’s Madden Skidmore in the finals.

Javin Douglas also won three straight matches to reach the finals at 126 pounds.

He won by tech fall over Edmond Santa Fe’s Noah Samples in the first round before pinning Yukon’s Hayden Sapcutt at the 2:17 mark in the quarterfinals. Douglas followed by pinning Norman North’s Kyler Lester at 1:09 in the semis before losing a 4-2 decision to Edmond North’s Christian Belford in the championship match.

Reyes reached the finals with three wins at 157 pounds.

He defeated Norman’s Max Cole by fall at 2:37 in the first round before defeating Edmond Memorial’s Ben Graham by tech fall in the quarterfinals. He then won by fall over Westmoore’s Samuel Gibson before losing a 7-1 decision to Edmond North’s Kody Routledge in the title match.

Baca picked up four wins on route to the third-place match at 190 pounds.

He pinned Yukon’s Jaden Iturrion at the 3:14 mark in the first round before losing by fall to Piedmont’s Jackson Blackburn in the quarterfinals.

Baca bounced back with three straight wins, including an 8-0 major decision over Edmond North’s Kaden Collins, a 10-4 win over Deer Creek’s Cash Reed, and a 5-4 ultimate tiebreaker win over Westmoore’s Jordan Cox.

He lost by fall to Norman’s Lance Eubanks at :58 in the third-place match.

Pritz picked up three wins in his fourth place run at 215 pounds.

He won a 7-1 decision over Deer Creek’s Gio Acero in the first round before defeating Yukon’s Destry Lujan 5-4 in the quarterfinals.

Pritz lost an 11-0 major decision to Edmond North’s Oscar Williams before bouncing back with a 7-1 win over Norman North’s Redmond Lindsey in the consolation semifinals. He lost 5-1 to Lijan in the third-place match.

Baylor Banks (Jr.), Caleb Moates (Fr.), Davis Howard (Fr.), Jaren Peterson (So.), Stalney Zgrzepski (Jr.), Matt Hiller (Sr.), Nate Pritz (Jr.), Julio Vera (So.), and Blake Davis (Jr.) rounded out Mustang’s team score.

Banks went 2-2 at 126 pounds, defeating Piedmont’s Herbert Sanders by fall and Edmond Santa Fe’s Noah Samples in an 8-6 decision.

Moates picked up one win at 132 pounds – a 7-4 decisison over Norman’s Masyn Matanane. Howard won twice, including a 4:20 fall over Southmoore’s Asher Schantz and a 3-2 decision over Norman’s Jaime Sanchez Juarez.

Peterson picked up a win by fall over Norman North’s Franklin Houts at 138 pounds while Zgrzepski won twice at 144, including a 1:32 fall over Moore’s Gage Yandell and a 6-4 decision over Southmoore’s Daric Johnson.

Hiller picked up three wins at 150 pounds. He won by tech fall over Edmond Santa Fe’s Breylan Diaz before an 8-4 win over Piedmont’s Dylan Watkins in the consolation bracket. He also won by fall over Deer Creek’s Brody Thomas.

Nate Prtiz won twice at 175 pounds, including a win by fall over Edmond Santa Fe’s Hunter Scheihing and a 4-1 decision over Moore’s Andrew Eagle.

Vera and Davis each won once. Vera defeated Edmond North’s AJ Boyer 1-0 at 285 pounds while Davis pinned Moore’s Braylen Herron at 4:28 in the second round at 285.
