Smith, Douglas, Reyes lead No. 10 Mustang to 11th place at 79th annual Geary Invitational

Led by a trio of placers, the No. 10 Mustang Broncos tied for 11th place in the 79th annual Geary Invitational during the first weekend in January.

Van Smith (Fr.), Javin Douglas (Fr.), and Daegan Reyes (Jr.) led the way as the Broncos sent nine wrestlers to the historical tournament.

Smith placed third at 113 pounds, reaching the championship match after three straight wins and a bye.

He defeated Comanche’s Hayden Dugan by tech fall in his opening match before pinning Elgin’s Talon Tahdooahnippah in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Kolby Quint of Arkansas City, Kan. by tech fall in the semifinals.

Smith dropped the first-place match to Michael Ruiz of Randall, Tex. in an 8-5 decision before losing 8-3 to Stillwater’s Aydan Thomas in the second-place match.

Douglas reached the semifinals at 126 pounds following two wins and a bye and eventually finished fifth.

He won by tech fall over Poteau’s Coy Fredickson in his first match before a second straight tech fall against Nico Venturi of Arlington Martin, Tex. in the quarterfinals.

Douglas lost a 4-3 decision to Stillwater’s Julio Aguirre in the semifinals before losing 3-2 to Edmond North’s Christian Belford in the consolation semis. He bounced back and ended his day on a high note however, pinning Piedmont’s Barrett Byers at the 3:12 mark for fifth place.

Reyes dropped his first match of the tournament but worked his way back through the consolation bracket to finish fifth at 157 pounds.

After losing a 10-5 decision to Stillwater’s Landyn Sommer, Reyes won by tech fall over Arkansas City’s Owen McAnulty and Choctaw’s Jory Garrett and defeated Poteau’s Jance Sommers by major decision. He then pinned Tascosa’s Noah Santiago at the 3:37 mark to reach the consolation semis.

Reyes lost a 5-3 decision to Arlington Martin’s Finn Shepard but rebounded with a 7-3 win over All Saints Episcopal School’s Brodie Bedford for fifth place.

Trusten Douglas (Fr.) and Jace Reed (Fr.) combined for three wins and placed 12th at 106 and 120 pounds. Nate Pritz (Jr.) went 2-2 at 175, Sam Pritz (Sr.) went 2-2 at 215, and Blake Davis (Jr.) went 2-2 at 285.

Top-ranked Edmond North took home the team championship with 244.5 points. No. 3 Stillwater finished second and No. 4 Broken Arrow finished third. The Broncos tied Class 5A No. 10 Del City with 43 points.
