Bank 7 Mustang Holiday Classic 1st Round Recap (BOYS): Broncos join defending tourney champs, two 5A powers in semifinals

A convincing win by the Mustang Broncos capped an exciting day of first-round action in the 6th annual Bank 7 Mustang Holiday Classic.

The Broncos cruised to a 71-50 win over Class 4A Marlow in Thursday’s nightcap, advancing to the tournament semifinals at the Mustang Event Center.

Two Class 5A powers and the tournament’s defending champions also advanced to the winner’s bracket along with coach Scott Hodges’ squad.

PC NORTH 57, SOUTHMOORE 47

The defending Bank 7 Mustang Holiday Classic champion Panthers advanced to the semifinals with a 10-point win over 6A rival Southmoore in the tournament opener.

Mekhi Thomas (Fr.) and Khai Brown (Jr.) each scored 14 points to lead PC North offensively. Brown added a team-high seven rebounds and five assists while Thomas grabbed three boards.

Marquez Taylor (Jr.) tallied nine points and six boards while Anthony Leonard (Jr.) scored seven points with four assists and four rebounds.

Kolton Brammer (So.) led Southmoore with 14 points. Jasper Chaves (Fr.) led the Sabercats with nine rebounds.

Southmoore jumped out to a 15-13 lead, however, a 29-17 run by the Panthers in the second and third quarters ultimately decided the game.

CARL ALBERT  78, CADDO 28

The defending Class 5A state runner-up Titans dominated Class A’s second-ranked Bruins with a 50-point victory in the second game of the opening round.

Three players scored in double digits for Carl Albert, including a game-high 21 points from Quincy Hopkins (Sr.). He added three assists, two rebounds, and two steals in the victory.

Steven Anderson (So.) tallied 14 points with two boards, two helpers, and two takeaways. Hutch Russell (Sr.) added 11 points, two assists, and two rebounds.

DJ Dill (Jr.) led Caddo with 16 points and five rebounds. Carson Culbreath (Sr.) scored nine points with four boards.

The Titans shot over 64-percent (31-for-48) from the field, including a 56-percent mark (7-for-12) from three-point range.

DEL CITY 69, SEILING 47

The defending Class 5A state champion Eagles made it two straight 5A vs A blowouts with a 69-47 win over Class A No. 7 Seiling.

12 players scored for Del City, including Jashawn McCalister (Jr.) who finished with a team-high 13 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists.

Kentrell Thurston (Sr.) scored eight points with three boards and three helpers while Omari Overall (Sr.) scored seven points. Ladainian Fields (Sr.) and Tayvann Johnson (Jr.) each scored six points.

Hudson Hamar (Sr.) led the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Brock Gore (Sr.) added eight points while Kaden Manuel (Sr.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Del City opened the game with an 18-9 run and never looked back. Seiling played just six players for the majority of the contest.

MUSTANG 71, MARLOW 50

Tyson Pogi (Fr.) and Roman Miller (Jr.) led the way as Mustang cruised past the Outlaws in the final game of the first round.

Both guards were sensational, combining to go 20-for-32 from the floor.

Pogi finished with a game-high 28 points while adding three assists and three rebounds. He was on fire from deep, going 8-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Miller scored 24 points while grabbing a game-high seven rebounds. He also dished out two assists and finished with three steals and one block on the defensive end.

The Johnson twins also played well, combining for 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Jaden finished with nine points while Jaytee chipped in five.

Adrian Calvillo (Sr.) and Cole Clipson (Sr.) combined for five points.

The Broncos shot 56-percent from the floor overall, including a 57-percent mark from three-point range. They outrebounded Marlow 71-50 and held the Outlaws to 43-percent shooting.
