Gragg, Theriot earn gold as Broncos finish third in Blanchard; Team places 11 overall in first two tournaments

The Mustang Broncos are off to a strong start this winter, turning out a pair of solid performances in the first two tournaments of the 2023-24 season.

Rayann Gragg (Jr.) and DeKadence Theriot (So.) helped spark the team’s hot start as the Broncos finished third at the Blanchard Invitational on Dec. 2.

Cheyenne Reyman (Sr.) and Neveah Kent (Sr.) kept things rolling at the Wrestle Like a Girl Cache Invitational last weekend.

BLANCHARD INVITATIONAL

Gragg and Theriot needed just six matches and six pins to claim their gold medals in Blanchard.

Gragg breezed through the 155-pound bracket, starting her tournament with a win over Makenna Howell (Ada) at 1:18. She defeated Zaleigh Rodriguez (Cache) at 1:16 in the semifinals before pinning Leeia Kosechequetah (Edmond Memorial) at :23 for the gold.

Theriot dominated just the same, starting with a win by fall over Savannah Wohrley (Western Heights) at 1:13. She defeated Lakyn Ferrington (Norman North) at 1:02 in the semifinals before pinning CJ Landry (Cache) at 2:26 for the championship.

Gragg dominated just the same at 155 pounds, starting her tournament with a win over Makenna Howell (Ada) at 1:18. She defeated Zaleigh Rodriguez (Cache) at 1:16 in the semifinals before pinning Leeia Kosechequetah (Edmond Memorial) at :23 for the gold.

All nine wrestlers placed for the Broncos, including Reyman and Molly Hanes (Jr.) who each earned a podium spot and silver medals at 120 and 145 pounds.

Reyman started the tournament at 145 pounds with two wins by fall over Rylee Blankston (Bridge Creek) and Isabella Long (Norman North) before falling to Alana Hercules (Elgin) in the championship match. She pinned Blankston at 1:07 and Long at :20.

Hanes opened the 120-pound bracket with a sudden victory over Amy Lara (Hinton) before moving to 2-0 due to a medical forfeit. She fell to Dru Turner (Hinton) before bouncing back with a fifth-round win by fall over Zoie Rogers (Altus) at 1:20.

Rebekah Vadakekut (Jr.) earned a bronze medal with a third-place performance at 100 pounds.

She dropped her first match to Natalia Martinez (Altus), but bounced back with two straight wins, defeating Carolyn Willingham (Altus) by fall at 2:47 and teammate Averee Hooper (So.) by fall at 3:54.

Vadakekut lost her final match – a 6-0 decision to Kyndale Barfield (Cache).

Hooper, Nevaeh Kent, Emilie Castillo, and Samantha Barton all placed inside the top five to round out Mustang’s team score of 65.

Hooper went 1-3 at 100 pounds, winning by fall over Carolyn Willingham (Altus) in Round 3. Castillo also went 1-3 at 235 pounds with a win by forfeit over Morgan McKinney (Cache).

Kent won twice at 115 pounds, defeating Nevaeh Miller (Edmond Memorial) by fall in the first consolation round before defeating McKenzie Moncada (Altus) by fall in the consolation semifinals. She fell to Victorya Cox (Cache) in the third-place match.

Barton competed well and gained valuable experience with four matches at 105 pounds.

WRESTLE LIKE A GIRL CACHE INVITATIONAL

The Broncos scored 65 team points in the Wrestle Like a Girl Cache Invitational, led by Reyman’s third-place finish at 140 pounds and Kent’s fourth place run at 115.

Reyman opened the tournament with a bye before winning by fall over Madilynn Ingram (Edmond North) at 3:26 in the quarterfinals. She fell to Nevaeh Reyes (Lawton) in the semifinals but bounced back with a consolation-semifinals win over Ashlyn Hyde (Westmoore).

Following her pin at 2:02 over Hyde, Reyman finished off her day with a win by fall over Riley Roblyer (Broken Arrow) at 1:13 in the third-place match. Her performance earned 18 team points.

Kent also started with a bye at 115 before pinning Mylene Jones (Kingfisher) at :32 in Round 2 and Angelia Warren (Perry) at 5:55 in the quarterfinals.

She fell to Hannah Lopez (Moore) in the semifinals but rebounded with a win by fall over Kristen De La Rose (Broken Arrow) at 4:09 in the consolation semifinals. Kent lost a 5-4 decision to Nataly Gloria (Altus) in the third-place match, but still tallied 17 team points.

Theriot scored 12 points for the Broncos by reaching the consolation semifinals at 110 pounds.

She started the tournament with a bye before winning by fall over Maylee Salinas (Bridge Creek) at :38.

After losing to Lily Lane (Bixby) in the quarterfinals, Theriot bounced back with two wins by fall over Katrina Gustafuson (Tuttle) and Sophia Reece (Broken Arrow). She fell to Abigail Verdejo Rivero (Stillwater) in the consolation semis.

Hanes scored eight team points with three wins at 120 pounds. She won by fall over Nicolette Moad (Edmond North) at 4:39 in Round 2 and defeated Sam Gabales (Southmoore) 4-2 in the quarterfinals. She also started the tournament with a bye.

Mahaylie Parada (Fr.) won two matches and received two byes at 170 pounds, earning five points for the Broncos.

Parada started with a bye and received another bye after dropping her second-round match. She won by fall over Kaysie Gallope (Westmoore) at :56 before scoring a sudden victory over Vanessa Nolan (Lawton Ike) in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Castillo and Georgia Horne (Fr.) each picked up one win.

Castillo defeated Taniya Reid-Harris (Elgin) in Round 3 of the consolation bracket at 235 pounds. She also received two byes.

Horne picked up a win by fall over Dakota Pierce (Lawton) in the first round of the consolation bracket at 155 pounds.

Vadakekut and Barton also competed for the Broncos at 100 and 105 pounds.

NEXT UP

The Broncos return to the mat and close out the first half of the season on Tuesday, taking on Putnam City West in the team’s first home dual. They come back from Christmas Break with a second straight home dual vs Piedmont.
