Mustang sends three to Jim Norick Arena for 2022-23 Class 6A state tournament

Reyes, Jackson, Douglas set to represent Broncos after qualifying at regionals


PIEDMONT – The Mustang Broncos finished with four placers at the 2023 OSSAA Class 6A west regional tournament last weekend at Piedmont High School.

Daegan Reyes (So.), Jacen Jackson (Sr.), and Javin Douglas (Jr.) punched their tickets to the 6A state tournament, each qualifying by placing inside the top-five at regionals. Sam Pritz placed sixth and will be an alternate at Jim Norick Arena this weekend.

Reyes (27-8) placed second at 150 pounds, opening the tournament with a win by fall over Putnam City’s Jerome Rice (16-22).

Reyes followed with a second straight fall over Piedmont’s Blake Johnston (0-2) before winning a 12-0 major decision over Norman North’s Cash Sessions (17-6) in the semifinals. He lost a 16-7 major to Edmond North’s Kody Routledge in the finals.

Jackson (32-8) placed third at 165 pounds, opening the tournament with a win by fall over Putnam City North’s Ryan Gooch (32-11) before a second straight fall over Piedmont’s Brady Roberts (0-2) to reach the semifinals.

After losing a major decision to Edmond Memorial’s Michael McCracken (3-1), Jackson made his way through the consolation bracket, rebounding with a second fall over Gooch before winning by fall over Yukon’s Ryan Martindale (3-2) for third place.

Douglas (31-10), who placed fourth at 120 pounds, also opened the tournament with two wins at 120 pounds, winning by fall over Putnam City’s Esteban Rivera (15-17) and Yukon’s Joseph Vallejo (3-3) to reach the semifinals.

Douglas lost by fall to Piedmont’s Cash Donnell (4-0), but bounced back with an 11-5 decision over Edmond North’s Max McDaniel (4-2) to reach the consolation finals. He fell to Choctaw’s Mason Hanna (13-9), but still claimed his spot at state.

Pritz (21-18) opened the heavyweight bracket with a bye before losing in a tiebreaker to Yukon’s Brayden Brock (3-2). He moved on after a forfeit in his first consolation bracket match and then won by fall over Moore’s Jax Rumsey (12-8) to reach the consolation semifinals.

Pritz lost a 7-5 decision to Choctaw’s Kaden Stitt (3-2) and then lost again to Brock, 3-1, in the fifth-place match.

The Broncos finished ninth in the team standings with 83.5 points. Edmond North won the tournament with 353 points while Westmoore (232) finished second and Yukon (188.5) finished third.

Douglas will get things started at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with a wrestle-in match against Jenks’ Carson Reich, who finished fifth in the east regional. With a win, Douglas would take on Donnell again in the first round.

Reyes will wrestle Mitchell Smith (34-6) from Sand Springs in the first round at 150 pounds. Smith finished third in the east regional. With a win, Reyes would likely face Stillwater’s Kael Voinovich in the semifinals.

Jackson will take on Bixby’s Jacob Snyder (17-7) in the first round at 165 pounds. Snyder finished second in the east regional. With a win, Jackson would likely face Edmond North’s Jude Randall (30-7) in the semis.

The first round of the state tournament is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. on Friday and continue through 3 p.m.
