Nine Broncos qualify for 2023 Class 6A State Meet, Nguyen and White break school records

EDMOND – The Mustang Broncos will be well represented next week as the state’s top swimmers hit the pool for the 2023 state championships.

Nine individuals and six relay teams punched their tickets to the Class 6A state meet, including Brenda Nguyen (Jr.) and Mason Scott (So.), who each broke their own school records on route to qualifying at regionals on Friday.

MUSTANG GIRLS

Nguyen will race in the 50 and 100-yard individual freestyles next week as well as the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. She finished second in the 50-free at regionals, topping her own school record with a time of :25.13, and third in the 100-free with a time of :56.41.

Jacee Jimeson (Jr.) will race three times at state, qualifying in the 100-yard backstroke as well as the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. She clocked a time of 1:04.96 in the backstroke on Friday and finished third overall.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Nguyen, Jimeson, Katelyn Capp (Jr.), and Zoey Clark (Sr.) clocked a time of 2:02.25 at regionals, good enough for eighth place. The same group finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, recording a time of 4:13.02.

Capp and Clark, along with Adamaris PadillaAscoy (Fr.) and Lillian Pinkerton (So.), qualified for state in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing 11th at regionals with a time of 2:03.79.

MUSTANG BOYS

Scott qualified for the most events out of any Mustang swimmer on Friday, including the 100-yard freestyle where he finished seventh and broke his own school record with a time of :51.34.

Scott will also race in the 50-yard freestyle and all three relays this Saturday. He finished seventh in the 50-free at regionals with a time of :23.69.

Brody White (Sr.), Gavin Davis (Jr.), and Parker Campbell (So.) punched their tickets to the state meet individually and will also join Scott on at least one relay team apiece.

White qualified in the 100-yard backstroke with a fifth-place finish at regionals, clocking a time of 1:00.04. Davis nailed down his spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a sixth-place finish and a time of 1:05.70. Campbell reached in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing 13th with a time of 2:04.31.

Scott, White, Davis, and Ace Seck (So.) finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.20) while Scott, White, Davis and Dominic Tonn (Fr.) finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:41.58).

Scott, Campbell, Tonn, and Seck finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.83.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET

The 2023 Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association State Swim Meet will be held at the Edmond Aquatic Center from Feb. 16-17. The Class 6A prelims will be held on the 16th at 2 p.m. followed by the finals on the 17th at 5:30 p.m.
