The Mustang High School cheer squad is in the running for its first-ever Game Day state championship and will compete for the crown on Friday at Moore.
The Broncos punched their ticket to the state competition after finishing fifth at regionals last week. The team very well could have taken second place, coming up just three points shy of runner-up Moore.
Mustang coach Caitlin Walker was impressed with the squad’s showing at regionals and believes it has every opportunity to take home the title on Friday.
“I was proud of how our girls performed and I think the judges’ comments afterwards were straight forward and good. Second through fifth place was tight so I think things should be pretty interesting at state.”
The Broncos scored 441.4 points, including 186.6 in crowd leading, 149 in fight song, and 106.4 in band dance. Moore and third-place Westmoore each finished with a grand total of 443.8 points while fourth-place Yukon tallied 442.8.
Mustang is scheduled to perform at 9 a.m., opening the preliminary round on Friday. The top-six squads from prelims reach the finals.
“The performance order makes it a little tough,” Walker said of kicking off the event.
“It just means we have to make a big impression.”
