Mustang boys place fourth, girls finish 10th in season-opening meet at Deer Creek

Mustang’s cross country teams jumpstarted their season last weekend at the 2022 Deer Creek Field Run with the boys placing fifth and the girls finishing 10th.

Six of the seven Bronco boys placed inside the top-30, including senior Jacoby Nance and sophomore Cameron Langdon, who each posted top-20 times.

Nance led the way, finishing in 12th place overall with a time of 16:29.52. He finished just ahead of Langdon, who placed 13th with a time of 16:31.36. Nance shed nearly a full minute off of his time from the same race last season.

Juniors Luke Balliew and Carson Patten finished nearly side-by-side, coming in 20th and 21st place. Balliew finished with a time of 16:52.54 while Patten posted 16:56.80, shedding over 40 seconds off his time from last year’s run. Senior Dylan Chaoomchairsiri rounded out the team’s scorers, coming in 25th place with a time of 17:07.39. He cut 10 seconds off of his time from last year’s event.

Junior Ryan Cable and sophomore Carson Fincher rounded out Mustang’s overall times. Cable nearly cracked the top-25, placing 27th with a time of 17:12.48 while Fincher placed 46th with a time of 18:05.25.

Mustang’s top-5 overall time was 1:23:58 with an average time of 16:46.61, good for a score of 91, which kept the team out of third place by just one point behind Class 5A Piedmont.

Edmond North won the meet with a score of 35 points and a top-5 total time of 1:21:48. Deer Creek finished second with 46 points and a top-5 time of 1:22.10.

The Bronco girls were led by senior Katie Jones and junior Carol Le, who each cracked the top-40.

Jones placed 31st overall with a time of 21:07.40, shedding four second off her time from the event last season. Le placed 37th overall with a time of 21:32.48, coming in 20 seconds quicker than last year. Coach Greg Osborne mentioned before the season that he would like to see Le on Jones’ hip in 2022.

Senior Emily Krafft finished as the team’s third scorer, placing 45th overall with a time of 22:08.76. She showed off the strides she made in the offseason by taking off nearly two minutes from her time at last year’s run. Junior Kiara Smith rounded out the team’s scorers, coming in 64th overall with a time of 24:00.35.

Sophomores Madison Smith and Avery Frings rounded out the team’s overall times, placing 66th and 71st. Smith posted a time of 24:13.41 while Frings came in at 24:46.45.

The team’s top-5 overall time was 1:51.41 with an average time of 22:20.24. The Broncos scored 232 points, finishing just behind ninth-place Choctaw. Edmond Memorial won the meet with 61 points, Deer Creek finished second with 62 and Piedmont came in third with 66.

The Broncos continue their season this Saturday with the 2022 edition of the Mustang Harrier night race. The event will be held at Wild Horse Park and will be run under the lights.
