Mustang outscores Muskogee 31-3 in district doubleheader sweep

The Mustang Broncos combined for 31 runs on 33 hits in a district doubleheader sweep of the Muskogee Roughers on Sept. 9 at home.

Coach Lacy Darity’s squad moved to 8-0 in Class 6A District 4 with the two victories, which also marked the team’s 11th win in 12 games following a 1-4 start to the season.

Altogether, the Broncos (16-6, 9-0) tallied eight doubles and two home runs against the Roughers (11-13, 4-7). Senior pitchers Amelia Mason and Aubree Hall combined for 10 innings of work, each taking home a win.

GAME 1: MUSTANG 13, MUSKOGEE 2

The Broncos scattered 12 hits across five innings in a 13-2 Game 1 win over the Roughers.

First baseman Rylann Beeson (Jr.), centerfielder Lexy Kierstead (Jr.), catcher Jade Ashbaugh (So.), and left fielder Weslyn McCorvey (Fr.) each produced multi-hit performances, including a four-hit, five-RBI game by Ashbaugh.

Ashbaugh, Beeson, McCorvey, and shortstop Reese Poage (Jr.) all doubled while second baseman Abigail Keele (Jr.) hit a homer in the victory.

Mason recorded the win, allowing just one earned run on two hits. She struck out seven and needed just 70 pitches to complete the game.

SCORING PLAYS

Mustang scored two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning.

Poage reached on an error to lead off the frame, followed by a double by Beeson. Ashbaugh drove both runners home with a two-RBI single, giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead.

Darity’s squad added five runs on five hits, two errors, and a groundout in the bottom of the second.

McCorvey led the inning off with a double before scoring on an error off the bat of Mason to make it 3-0. Right fielder Natalia Delgado (Sr.) reached on an error in the next at-bat before scoring on an RBI-groundout by third baseman Adyson McGavock (So.). Courtesy runner Reece Fixico (So.) also scored on a passed ball to give Mustang a 5-0 advantage.

Poage doubled in the next at-bat before an RBI-single by Beeson made it 6-0. Kierstead followed with a single before an RBI-knock by Ashbaugh for a 7-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Muskogee scored two runs on an error and a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. However, the Broncos answered with one run on two hits in the bottom half of the frame.

Ashbaugh led off with a single before courtesy runner Madison Smith (Fr.) crossed the plate on an RBI-single by McCorvey to make it 8-2.

Mustang closed the victory with five runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom of the fifth.

McGavock and Beeson each walked before a single by Kierstead loaded the bases with one out. Ashbaugh made it 10-2 with a two-RBI double before Keele closed the book at 13-2 with a three-run homer.

GAME 2: MUSTANG 18, MUSKOGEE 2

The Bronco offense kept rolling with 21 hits in Game 2 of the double dip.

Six players recorded at least two hits, including Poage, Beeson, Kierstead, McCorvey, Skyla Hagan (Fr.), and Delgado.

Hagan led the way, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI while Poage, Kierstead, and McCorvey each finished with three hits. Beeson went 2-for-4 while Delgado went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Kierstead homered and finished with three RBI while Keele and Raegan Hodde (Fr.) each doubled. Keele drove home two runs.

Hall finished off the two-game sweep, allowing two unearned runs on one error. She gave up just three hits and three walks while striking out seven Roughers.

SCORING PLAYS

The Broncos scored four runs on four hits and three errors in the bottom of the first inning.

Beeson and Kierstead got things going with back-to-back one-out singles before a Rougher error off the bat of Keele brought home the first run of the frame. McCorvey and Hagan followed with back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 3-0. McCorvey scored later on another Muskogee error for a 4-0 lead.

Mustang added six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second.

McGavock led off with a single and scored on an RBI-knock by Poage in the following at-bat. Two batters later, Kierstead made it 7-0 with a two-run home run to right field. Keele reignited the offense with a two-out double before three straight RBI-hits by McCorvey, Hagan, and Delgado.

An RBI-single by McCorvey made it 8-0 before an RBI-double by Hagan and a RBI-single by Delgado extended the advantage to 10-0.

The Roughers scored one run on a double and a Mustang error in the top of the third, however, the Broncos put five runs on the board in the bottom of the third.

Poage and Beeson led off the frame with back-to-back singles before an RBI-groundout by Kierstead and an RBI-single by Ashbaugh to make it 12-1. Two batters later, McCorvey drove home Keele, who reached on a fielder’s choice, for a 13-1 lead. Hagan and Delgado followed with an RBI-double and an RBI-single for a 15-1 advantage.

The Broncos finished off their offensive attack with three runs on four hits and a walk in the bottom of the fourth.

Poage led off the frame with a single before a one-out single by Kierstead. Hodde doubled home both runners to make it 17-1. Following a walk to Fixico, Hagan extended the lead to 18-1 with a double.

Muskogee scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut the advantage to 18-2.

NEXT UP

The Broncos travel to Midwest City to take on the Bombers (3-11, 0-7) on Tuesday, Sept. 17 before returning home on Sept. 19 to host the Edmond North Huskies (9-8, 4-4). Mustang has already defeated both teams in district play this season.
